In Amstrad's publicity blurb there is much made of their dominance of the 8086 equipped PC market, with over 50% of sales attributed to Amstrad last year according to a Romtec story. But how much longer will this dominance last? Now the question is how will IBM's recent announcement regarding PC price cuts affect Amstrad. 1 Next 23:02:89 8 News Index 9 Micronet

The biggest name of all, IBM of course, is also absent from the show, a trend which Big Blue has followed for three years now. However, if IBM wasn't there in body, you couldn't escape its soul. Rumours had been circulating for the last week that a major announcement on PS/2 pricing was due yesterday (Wednesday). Neither Dixons or the big corporate IBM dealer, Computer Centre, were able to comment in reaction to the IBM initiative today, though it's thought that the discount could bring Model 30 prices to within 15% of Amstrad retail prices. Some notable industry watchers say that Amstrad should be flattered that IBM has apparently lowered its prices to compete. MICRONET (c) 800111474b 0p NEWS: Fastest PCs Launched FRI The STEP range has several features which set them apart from other companies' offerings. In particular, they use a special memory management technique called 'write-back' cache. This technology has, until now, been the sole domain of mainframe computers. Caching is used in most 386-based PCs as a way of reducing the cost of memory while keeping the speed of the machine up. Using a high-speed cache allows the manufacturer to use slower speed (cheaper) chips in the main memory of the system. If the CPU only accessed the slow memory, then it would have to be kept hanging around waiting for... More... # 1 Next 23:02:89 8 News Index 9 Micronet

The cache controller chip has to 'guess' what data the CPU is going to need and have it ready and waiting when the CPU requests it. When the CPU writes to the cache it must wait for the main memory to updated as well. The Everex cache system is different, as it allows new data to be written to the cache without it having to be written to the main memory at the same time (the cache controller chip... This reduces the time the CPU has to be kept waiting when it writes to RAM and makes the Step 386/25 the fastest PC around. The system also differs from other caching mechanisms by being expandable to 256K (64K is the cache size provided in Compaq, Dell and other machines). According to Everex, their expandable cache yields a 'hit' ratio of 93 to 99 percent (this ratio describes how often the CPU finds the data it needs in the cache -- going outside the cache for data will slow the CPU down). MICRONET (c) 800500225a 0p HARDWARE REVIEWS 28/11/88 Euro PC Reviewed by David Janda The market for low cost PCs is expanding. Alan Sugar can no longer claim to have the market sewn up as far as choice is concerned. Having said that, his share of the market - as far as sales are concerned - is big. Of course, we've been spoilt for choice when it comes to low cost systems. Far Eastern manufacturers have been dumping their boxes on our shores for quite some time. Their offering consists of the Euro PC. Made in Turkheim, West Germany, the kit is aimed squarely at the first time buyer and is a direct competitor to the likes of the Spectrum PC200. For the purposes of this review, I tested the Euro PC with both monitors plus the Schneider 3.5" 20Mbyte hard disc. First impressions count, so they say. The Euro PC struck me as being a very well built piece of kit; it looks good too. Indeed, some have commented that the keyboard is similar to that on the Amiga. MICRONET (c) 800500225d 0p HARDWARE REVIEWS Euro PC The keyboard is a quality item with well spaced keys that do not suffer from the tatty feel of Amstrad's 1512/1640 series. Four LEDs above the keypad indicate the status of the floppy drive, power, caps and num lock. Another nice design consideration is the sloping front which serves well as a palm rest. Ventilation is plentiful with slots stretching the complete length of the upper/rear casing, as well as underneath the machine and to one side. I kept the machine on for 36 hours and it didn't even get warm. No doubt this is partly due to the... More... # 3 Start 8 PC Base 9 Micronet

Both the mono and colour monitors have internal power supplies so the number of wires trailing from the system is kept to a manageable two. I've got mixed feelings when it comes to expansion. On the one hand there are enough ports at the back of the machine to keep anyone happy, yet, as far as card and memory expansion is concerned, the Euro is stuck in a rut. Why? There is no internal facility to upgrade RAM from 512K to a full 640K. To do that requires using up the only expansion slot which is a half-height affair. More... # 3 Start 8 PC Base 9 Micronet

On default the Euro boots from the internal drive, but the system can be configured to boot from the external floppy, or the hard disc if no other drive is attached. MICRONET (c) 80050063b 0p PC Base COMMENT 21/02/89 First up - keyboards. The French have a system called Azerty rather than Qwerty like us over here (and most of the world, come to that!). Each country is going to need its accents on a keyboard: umlauts for Germany, untold weird squiggles for places like Norway. So that's different keyboards for each country, I expect. For seconds - online systems. Once all the small companies start branching into other countries, they're going to need good lines of communications with their 'foreign' branches. How about the power supply in the different countries? Will Europe suddenly adopt a standard mains voltage and make everyone's old appliances useless without expensive alterations so they can run on the new voltage? Of course, that isn't too big a problem; Al needs only to put a switch in his computers to make them run of a variety of voltages. More expense though. More... # 3 Start 8 PC Base 9 Micronet
MICRONET (c) 80050063d 0p PC Base COMMENT 21/02/89 Maybe we'll even have something called ESCII - European Standard Code for Information Interchange rather than ASCII. Don't forget about ISO7, too: another character set which is still quite well used. Of course, this is all pure fiction. 1992 will probably come and go with the same speculation and disappointment that 1984 did. What with the advent of the Chunnel though, it seems certain we're heading for Big Changes. 1992 is the year it all starts, I doubt very much if it'll be running smoothly much before 2000. In Operation Torch the British, Americans (and, after a slow start, the French) attempted to bounce the Germans and Italians out of North Africa. They nearly succeeded, but the speed of the German reaction was such that it took a long and costly campaign (Operation Vulcan) to bring about the Axis surrender at Cape Bon in May 1943. MICRONET (c) 800500706b 0p PC REVIEWS Vulcan R T Smith The inexperience of the newly-trained Americans, political complications with the French plus the need to learn how to operate a Supreme Allied Headquarters over units from many nations, were partly responsible for the delay. The lessons learned played a large part in the later success of the landings in Sicily, Italy and Normandy. Vulcan is not really concerned with the high strategy. Its interest lies in the more local strategy and tactics. There were five scenarios in the original 48K Spectrum game - extended in the PC version. Technically, the game is superb. As... The IBM version has two additional scenarios: an option in which the Axis has captured Malta (thus easing its own supply problems and increasing those of the Allies) and one in which Rommel's Africa Korps is destroyed before it gets back to Tunisia. These add quite a lot to the fun, but are less interesting to students of history. MICRONET (c) 811220043b 0p011110665 Elktel, the choice of cucumbers ? Me again, Gaz Babb, well what fun I've been having. So has Marchino, all that studying he has been doing, you name it Physics, Geography, BIOLOGY (!!!). MICRONET (c) 811220043c 0p011110665 More on that slight experiment, which Marchino has been indulging in aswell, keeps his mind off all those BIOLOGY questions. To give myself the concept of the Slogger RX, but not the tin box type thing, I pulled my Elk apart, so I had a bare Elk PCB, Plus 3 PCB and Plus 1 PCB, which neatly goes in a big draw by my side, and connected to this is a long (1½m odd) ribbon cable from the Keyboard to the Elk itself. Not only will we look inside these protocols (ie at the mechanisms used), but we'll also look at them from the outside: how we configure a modem to use them; what strange effects may happen when using, say, MNP with a non- MNP modem; and the pros and cons of using/not using these protocols. Background and History --------------------------------------- I started the last series with a bit of background to the topic; that was quite popular, so I thought I would start the same way again. In the "early days" the only reason for wanting to use a modem was because the teletype you were using was not located next to the computer. One example would be that of a student in a university: the computer is in one building, but... more... # 3: Start 7: Write 9: Index

After a while, you would find that a department would wish to use several terminals. As remote usage became the norm, it was apparent that using lots of individual modems was no longer cost effective. A way was needed of combining several low-speed links over a faster link, so a faster modem and a multiplexer would be used. The modem would provide the aggregate or trunk link, which the MUX would split into many channels. more... # 3: Start 7: Write 9: Index
MICRONET (C) 800020211e 0p ADVANCED DATA COMMS Series Two Pt 1 The simplest type of MUX is a TDM: Time Division Multiplexer. Here, the available time is split (usually equally) between the users, so that a 1200 bps link would support 3 x 300 bps users. A TDM is a simple device, but is actually very inefficient: if a terminal is not in use, no-one else can take advantage of that fact. Thus the statistical multiplexer was invented: this allowed users to only take up time on the link when they needed it. Typically, a user may only be using the link for half the time (the other half they would be waiting for the... more... # 3: Start 7: Write 9: Index

As a result, a 1200 bps modem link would be able, on average, to support eight users rather than only four. At the transmitting end of the link, the STAT MUX would wait for either (a) a full block of characters (pick a number.... 32? 64? 128?); or (b) a timeout. At this point it would send a packet of information. This packet would start with a reference as to which port it was destined for and a counter to say how many characters there were in the packet. There is nothing to say that the aggregate must also be asynchronous. In fact, if we were to strip all the stop and start bits from the user data, we could get a 20% increase in data throughput.... just by using synchronous data instead of asynchronous data. The disadvantage (if you can remember back to my original series) of synchronous modems is that you have no way of knowing which bit is the FIRST data bit of a character. With a stat-mux, this is no problem: it is all handled by the mux, and as the muxes are ALWAYS talking to each other (if only to check that the link is still working) then they won't need to re-synchronise very often. So if we can use a synchronous aggregate, we can use synchronous modems to connect the two muxes. MICRONET (C) 800664212d 0p ADVANCED DATA COMMS Series Two Pt 2 All this now nicely leads us on to MNP. First, what does MNP stand for? Microcom Network Protocol is the answer. You notice that there is nothing in there that says anything specifically about MODEMS. That is because the MNP error correction protocols apply equally to a comms NETWORK as to a modem. In its simplest form, a network could be two terminals, each plugged into an asynchronous modem. In this case, the MNP error correction would occur between the two modems. In a larger network, there may be... more... # 3: Start 7: Write 9: Index

If the user wants an error corrected link, then he could plug in an "error correcting unit" on each end of the link and plug his terminal into that. In this case, the modems have NO error correction, and the error correction is across the COMPLETE LINK. When Microcom applied this to modems, they decided to make the protocol available to other manufacturers - for a price. As different manufacturers took out licenses, then modems from DIFFERENT manufacturers could all not just link up to each other (assuming they used the same modulation scheme!) but could work in an error corrected mode. However, at the same time, other manufacturers had their OWN error correction protocols for modems: for example, early Dowty Quattro modems... more... # 3: Start 7: Write 9: Index

MNP level 5 requires a single payment (about £2000, I think) by the manufacturer for a license. Thus MNP was fast becoming the de-facto standard (in the same way that the Hayes AT command set was), so more and more modems included MNP. Now that microprocessors are so cheap, almost ALL new modems can include MNP, and indeed almost all DO. MNP started life as a very simple half- duplex protocol, very similar in operation to Xmodem. As it was improved, it was made 100% backwards compatible: thus MNP level 4 operation implies that it can also work at levels 1, 2 and 3.
